Germany v Argentina
Estadio Maracana, Rio de Janeiro

Team News
Match Notes
The German machine rolls on. And after Tuesday's brutal humiliation of hosts Brazil, Argentina could be forgiven for wondering how to stop them.
Germany have not won win this trophy for 24 years and having lost the last two finals appear seriously determined to secure a fourth success.
Argentina's wait has been longer; they last won the World cup on home soil, in 1986, when they beat West Germany 3-2 with Jorge Burruchaga's 84th minute winner dividing the teams.
This is also a repeat of the final in 1990 when West Germany won 1-0 in Rome thanks to an Andy Brehme penalty with four minutes remaining.
So a late goal could determine the winner, and despite being on their own continent, Argentina may find Germany stronger in most departments.
Stat of the game: Germany's Miroslav Klose has 16 World Cup goals, a record. But his goals have come in 23 games with an average of 0.70. Compatriot Gerd Müller scored 14 World Cup goals in just 13 games, an average of 1.08.

Germany (Possible, 4-3-3): Neuer; Lahm, Hummels, Boateng, Höwedes; Khedira, Schweinsteiger, Kroos; Özil, Müller, Götze.

Argentina (Possible, 4-2-3-1): Romero; Zabaleta, F Fernández, Garay, Rojo; E Perez, Mascherano; Palacio, Messi, Lavezzi; Higuaín.

Brasilia: After Brazil`s utter humiliation against Germany, anything less than a win in Saturday`s third-place match against an indifferent Netherlands team would deepen the gloom hanging over the World Cup hosts.

Brazil`s astounding 7-1 semi-final thrashing by rampant Germany ended their dream of winning a sixth World Cup, and a first on home soil, and plunged the nation into despair.

There is still the prospect, an appalling one for many Brazilians, that arch-rivals Argentina could win Sunday`s final in Rio de Janeiro.

Although third spot would be scant consolation for many, the match at the national stadium is one Brazil, and under-fire coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, must take very seriously.

By contrast, Scolari`s Dutch counterpart Louis van Gaal, whose side exceeded many people`s expectations by reaching the last four, has said the third-place game is pointless and that too will ramp up the pressure on the hosts.

Savaged in local media after the Germany match, Scolari labeled the semi-final disaster the worst day of his life and he and his staff are widely expected to step aside after the tournament whether they beat the Dutch or not.

"We have a deal ... until the game on Saturday and after that, probably, we will have a conversation to sort some things out," Scolari said.

"I will continue with my life, the players will also continue to be winners and we must continue," he added.

"History will have to record that Brazil, for the first time since 2002, reached the semi-finals."

Van Gaal also came in for criticism after his side, who began the tournament by thrashing holders Spain 5-1, failed to score in either their quarter-final against Costa Rica or Wednesday`s semi against Argentina.

They beat the Costa Ricans on penalties but lost their shootout to Argentina when goalkeeper Sergio Romero stopped two Dutch spot-kicks.

Van Gaal, who will take charge of Manchester United after the World Cup, told a news conference the third-place game "should never be played" and noted he had been saying the same thing for 10 years.

"But the worst thing is I believe that chances are that you lose twice in a row," he said.

"And a tournament in which you`ve played so marvelously well, you would go home as a loser just because you could possibly have lost the last two matches and this has got nothing to do with sport in my view.

"So, in a football tournament particularly not at the last stage you shouldn`t have players playing match for third-fourth place. Because there is only one award that counts and that is becoming world champion."

The Netherlands have never won soccer`s global showpiece despite reaching the final three times. They lost in 1974 and 1978 to West Germany and Argentina respectively and were beaten 1-0 by Spain in South Africa four years ago.

Brazil and the Netherlands have played 11 times and four times at the World Cup, including the quarter-final in 2010 when the Dutch came from behind to win 2-1.

Holland (Possible, 5-3-2): Cillesen; Kuyt, De Vrij, Vlaar, Indi, Depay; Wijnaldum, Sneijder, Blind; Robben, Van Persie.

Brazil (Possible 4-3-3): Julio Cesar; Dani Alves, Marcelo, Thaigo Silva, David Luiz; Luiz Gustavo, Paulinho; Oscar, Hulk,; Fred.

Holland v Argentina
Arena de Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo
Kick-off: 21.00 BST

Team News Holland keeper Jasper Cillesen is expected to start despite being replaced, by Newcastle United's Tim Krul, ahead of the penalty shoot-out against Costa Rica in the quarter-finals.
But there is concern over the availabilityof Robin van Persie, who missed training on Tuesday with stomach problems.
Meanwhile, Ángel Di María is missing for Argentina with a thigh injury suffered in the quarter-final win over Belgium.
Sergio Agüero has a chance of being available following a leg muscle injury but the Manchester City forward may have to settle for a place on the bench.
Match Notes
Germany await the winners of this semi-final and after the 7-1 humiliation over Brazil on Tuesday, one wonders what is in store from this game.
Argentina won the World Cup in 1978, as hosts and in 1986, in Mexico City.
Holland, though, are the nearly men of the world game, having reached and lost three finals.
Having been beaten by West Germany in 1974, they reached the final again four years later and lost to the hosts.
Now the 2010 runners-up have the chance of revenge, having lost to Argentina in the final in 1978.
While Argentina have Lionel Messi, Holland have Robin van Persie, not to mention Arjen Robben, and the presence of those players should make for an intruiging clash, and one that is hard to call.

Stat of the game: Argentina's Lionel Messi has had 15 attempts at goal, two more than Holland's Robin van Persie.

Holland (Possible, 5-3-2): Cillesen; Kuyt, De Vrij, Vlaar, Indi, Depay; Wijnaldum, Sneijder, Blind; Robben, Van Persie.
Argentina (Possible, 4-2-3-1): Romero; Zabaleta, F Fernández, Garay, Rojo; E Perez, Mascherano; Palacio, Messi, Lavezzi; Higuaín.
Referee: Cuneyt Cakir (Turkey).

Germany Brazil

Tue, Jul 8, 9:00 PM • Semi-finals

Estádio Mineirão, Belo Horizonte

the first semi-final of the 2014 FIFA World Cup is Brazil vs. Germany at Estadio Mineirao in Belo Horizonte on Tuesday, July 8th, 2014. The host nation qualified for the semis by topping Group A ahead of Mexico, Croatia and Cameroon and then eliminating Chile and Colombia in the knockout stage of the competition. Brazil have not impressed so far in this World Cup, but they are undefeated, they do have the home crowd support and they do have the refereeing decisions going their way. On Tuesday, Brazil will have to do without their captain, Thiago Silva, due to a suspension, and their ‘heart and soul’, Neymar Jr., who is out for a couple of months with a back injury. Germany have been comfortable, clinical and consistent so far in this World Cup. They won Group G ahead of USA, Portugal and Ghana, which they followed by victories over Algeria and France in the knockout rounds. This is the fourth consecutive World Cup semi-final for Germany. The nation’s goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, has been excellent so far in the tournament, while up front, Thomas Muller is a clear and present danger for the opposing goal. The odds for the upcoming match in Belo Horizonte are: Brazil: 7/4 Draw: 23/10 Germany: 9/5 To Qualify: Brazil: 10/11 Germany: 10/11 To win the World Cup: Brazil: 11/4 Germany: 11/4

Germany (Possible 4-3-3): Neuer; Boateng, Mertesacker, Mustafi, Höwedes; Kroos, Lahm, Schweinsteiger; Özil, Müller, Götze.

Brazil (Possible 4-3-3): Julio Cesar; Dani Alves, Marcelo, Thaigo Silva, David Luiz; Luiz Gustavo, Paulinho; Oscar, Hulk,; Fred.

Belgium vs USA
Tuesday, July 1, 2014
Arena Fonte Nova, Salvador
Kick-off: 21.00 BST.

Team News Belgium are without midfielder Steven Defour after Fifa confirmed he would receive a one-match ban for his two-footed challenge during the game against South Korea.
There is also a concern over Manchester City's Vincent Kompany, who missed training again on Sunday with a groin injury.
The United States have no fresh problems after Jozy Altidore was cleared to play after missing the last two games with a hamstring problem.
Match Notes
Fifa confirmed after the group games that the United States had just 72 attacks in three games - putting them 31st among 32 teams.
Yet Salvador, the setting for this tie, has produced 21 goals in four previous games, an average of 5.25 goals a game.
Belgium qualified with three wins out of three but have not impressed and are due a better performance.
But Jürgen Klinsmann took Germany to the last four in 2006 and has all the confidence of a man who can at least go to the quarter-finals.
Belgium (Possible, 4-2-3-1): Courtois; Alderweireld, Kompany, Van Buyten, Vermaelen; Witsel, Fellaini; Mertens, E Hazard, De Bruyne; Lukaku.

Argentina vs Switzerland
Tuesday, July 1, 2014
Arena de Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo
Kick-off: 17.00 BST.

Team News Argentina miss Sergio Agüero so Ezequiel Lavezzi will deputise again in a three-man attack.
Switzerland, last in the quarter-finals in 1954 - when they hosted the tournament - are without Steve von Bergen, injured against France, and Mario Gavranovic, who suffered a serious knee injury in training on Saturday.
Match Notes
There can be no doutbing who the favourites are.
In six previous meetings Argentina have scored 14 goals including three last time out, in 2012, when Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick in a 3-1 win.
In theory it should also be a clean game; both sides have collected just one yellow card so far.
It may not be one-sided but with Messi present there can be only one winner.
Stat of the game: Argentina have never lost to Switzerland in six clashes, winning four and drawing two

Argentina (Possible, 4-3-3): Romero; Garay, Zabaleta, Rojo, Fernandez; Gago, Di Maria, Mascherano; Lavezzi, Higuain, Messi.
Switzerland (Possible, 4-4-2): Benaglio; Lichtsteiner, Rodriguez, Djourou, Schaer; Inler, Xhaka, Shaqiri, Behrami; Mehmedi, Drmic.
